Ask and You Shall Receive....

Ask and you shall receive.

One of the things I love most about owning a yoga studio is that I never know what's going to happen from one day to the next. We have a studio at YG that has taken on a life much bigger than I'd imagined when I opened 6 years ago. I love, love, love how students and teachers hang out before and after class and just want to be part of a yoga gang.  Me too! We've got t-shirts and our weird and beautiful little space to meet up and practice in - what more do we need?

A TRIP TO MEXICO!!!!!!

I and my sweet new friend, Melissa Schoeller, booked a week-long retreat in the unbelievably gorgeous Tulum. The whole thing happened very organically, over the course of a yoga class and a few coffee dates at Anelace. I had it on my list of new teaching adventures for 2018 but I never would have guessed it would have come together the way it did. Melissa has been teaching at this wonderful, ocean-side retreat for many years now and was kind enough to ask me to co-teach with her for a week this April. I CANNOT wait to go and I hope you can come too.

For all the info and to register go to the Retreat page on the YG Website.

We Get to Change It When It's No Longer Useful

I LOVE the challenge of figuring out how to move toward a pose I'm inspired by but can't get into yet. It's fun to narrow down the mechanics of a pose to isolate what is essential to focus on in order to create something new.

I taught the 'Adjustments' workshop (1 of 3 of my Saturday Workshop Series) a couple weekends ago so we could do just that, focus on the essentials of each pose and learn to understand them through assisting and adjusting each other. I had a blast working with a great group of teachers and students who settled into YG for an afternoon to geek out on alignment cues on how to create support and understanding in a series of poses through learning adjustments.

I had a great discussion with a few of the attendees afterwards. Our take away was this: when we learn something more useful or better, we don't have to keep doing it the same way. We get to be creative and to keep evolving. Our yoga practices teach us not to get caught up in what we can't do and to stay focused on what we can. That this is a cyclical process of learning. We will get physically fit and healthy as we weave and unwind through practice on our mats and it's also a very useful metaphor for the way we're moving through the world off our mats.

This Saturday our focus will be handstands and inversions. We will 'workshop' the mechanics of what  actions we can start to isolate and focus on to work toward just sticking a handstand, headstand or forearm balance in the middle of the room (it can happen!). We will stop and start and do demos and ask questions. We will make our way through a solid sequence of poses that will give us all a deep understanding of what is essential to get into these poses with strength and flexibility. All in the incubator of creative learning and evolving that makes YOGA Garden the wonderful, collaborative space to learn and grow that it is. It'll be fun, you should come.

Time For Something NEW < < <

It's Fall and a great time to start something new. I've always loved this time of year. As a kid I loved summer. I was athletic and summer vacation meant playing on a soccer team, hot summer nights playing kick-the-can with all the kids in our neighborhood after dark, bike rides....you get the picture.  Freedom to play around and get lost with friends for months. But I always welcomed the end of summer too. I liked the structure that came with a new school year and the change in season, the opportunity to learn something new.

Since YG opened 6 years ago (6 years!) I have been getting asked when was I going to teach trainings. And, truth be told, initially I had no plan for 200 or 300 hour teacher trainings. I knew I wanted to teach teachers and that I would eventually have a training program to do just that, but I wasn't sure what those training programs would look like. I needed to take some time as a new studio owner to get really clear on what was I teaching and how it was specific to my way of practicing and teaching.

So, for the first 2 winters I taught 6 week programs and just called them "Advanced Teacher Trainings". I just started to play around with how I was building classes around shapes and actions and tying them in with themes. I started to keep track of what I was using from the different systems of yoga I had been trained and certified in. What worked for me and what didn't. And it was great. I started to gain confidence around why I was choosing to teach the way I was, and just let it kind of take shape on it's own.

With that, a couple years into YG, students from our lovely community started asking (and then were very persistent, thank you Miss Calley Bliss and Pete Cairns) about getting certified through a YG TTing program. I was clear when I initially opened YG I didn't want to start training programs just to get people certified and credentialed. I wanted to be able to teach teachers to REALLY teach. To know how to work with students individually while in a group setting without stopping the rest of the class, for example. In particular I wanted to steer teachers away from teaching pose, pose, pose and teach them how to understand the ACTIONS of each pose in order to create the SHAPE. I wanted to do this through talking about linear vs cyclical learning and the importance of allowing ourselves to be vulnerable in order to learn something new. Understanding ALIGNMENT became the emphasis of my training and what I saw missing in many teachers understanding of the practice the most. I also wanted to teach teachers how to use metaphor in a clear and concise way that tied in with the physical practice.

By fall 2015 I felt clear and ready to teach teachers. I spent that fall getting organized, writing curriculum and setting up the behind-the-scenes materials necessary to start my my 200 Hour TT program in winter 2016 (thank you again, Calley Bliss).  I titled it UNDERSTANDING ALIGNMENT THROUGH ACTION and we spent 3 months geeking out on that. It was a lot of work and so much fun. More fun than I had imagined and I kind of fell in love with teaching teachers. With every training taught I've had this great opportunity to build it and change it and make it better for the next time.

And I kind of thought that would be it. I would train teachers and they would become a big part of the studio and community at YG and they would continue to learn and grow through that. I saw the 200 Hour TT as foundational and was clear to let my teachers know that it was really the beginning of what is a life-long study. I had kept a running tab of what we didn't have time for in the 200 Hour each time I taught it and started to organize materials for additional trainings for certified instructors. I got clear on how additional training would pick up on where the 200 Hour left off.  I wanted to have more time to teach the basics, how to teach with clarity and organize a class with intention. My certified teachers were asking for more.

This fall I started my first 300 Hour TT. I've titled it CLEAR AND VIBRANT VOICE and cannot wait to spend Wednesday nights for the next year with this great crew of yogis who are curious, and confident and understand how this process works and can't wait to learn more. I'm so thankful for each of the teachers and students who have jumped in to learn from me and spend time at YG to take their teaching and practice up. It's not kick-the-can or soccer but I love it just as much. It's all the freedom and structure we got as kids playing around together on summer nights with the excitement of learning something new when a new school year began.

Seeing OPPORTUNITY for GROWTH

YOGA Garden is a beautiful sacred space, which provides space to grow and learn through the practice of yoga. The 200 Hour Teacher Training provided tools to live yoga on and off your mat and applies a greater sense of understanding to you and the world you live in. How we place ourselves on our yoga mat says a lot about how we place ourselves in the world and how we interact with the world. This experience allowed me truly understand my body and it’s uniqueness - I now see my limitations as a place to push off from and grow into.  There’s a great power that happens on your mat in facing yourself and then noticing your limiting behaviors to grow to your full potential.

Thanks to Kaitlyn Julius (Fall 2016 YG Teacher Trainee) - for her kindness and insight. She brought so much laughter and fun to the training, perfectly timed when we needed it most. She spends her working days consulting and is an adventurer and avid traveller as a lover of life, that is when she's not at YOGA Garden honing her skills as a teacher and student. Kaitlyn is new to YG, only having found us just before the training began last August and has become an integral part of the studio in that short time. We are so happy to have her in the studio!

Work HOME for a New Year...

I think I love my work home just as much as I love my home-home.

YOGA Garden is a labor of love in all respects.

I have worked hard to fulfill a dream of creating a place that is beautiful and inspires freedom and creativity to do the work we need to do as individuals and together as a group. A place where I can go to do my work and feel good about working hard toward my goals at the end of each day.  I LOVE that I get to share this space with so many creative, intuitive and forever curious people who have also made this space their yoga home.

Here's to a new a year, our collective potential and working to fulfill dreams for all of us.  I wish you your dreams for 2017!!

Much Love, LVM

YOUR YEAR in a WORD

and that if you know the words that the world is made of,

you can make of it whatever you wish.

What's in there...In the dark?

This is the time of year where the days get shorter and the nights get longer.  Where we find ourselves at the beginning and the end.  The bounty of the growing season is coming to an end.  I cut my perennial gardens back and my beloved cut flower garden came out only 2 weeks ago and already feels long gone.  But we've still got kale and hearty greens to pick.  Root vegetables and squash to choose from.  The earth is not quite done with the cycle of this growing season, but close.

I LOVE this time of year.  This is the time of year we start asking ourselves what we want as we make our way toward a new year and reflect on what we wanted for the current year and how it went.   How did we do this trip around the sun?  What do we want for the coming year?  It's an ambiguous and inspiring space full of potential for the future and the same time an opportunity to reflect and be grateful for what we learned from the current year as it comes to a close.

I started this project, YOUR YEAR IN A WORD, for myself several years ago now.  The idea was to pick a word that would keep me focused as winter approached.  I would make a 'flag' of my word and put it on my nightstand so it would be the first thing I saw in the morning and the last thing I saw at night.  It would always kind of be out there to guide me like my own personal North Star when I got lost or off track.

In the yoga world we call this puja. Puja literally means 'to place in front of you what it is you want to become'.  How beautiful is that?! We set up a puja, or altar, in our yoga studios to recognize this for ourselves and each other.  To recognize we have a place to go where we get to do our work individually but together as a group.  More overlapping cycles of growth, change, and opportunity to design the lives we want and be thankful for the work we've done so far and recognize that in each other.

So, what is your work in the dark?  What do you want to move toward as we make our way through the end to a new beginning?

This Thursday I will teach the annual YOUR YEAR IN A WORD class.  I will start with a brief story on the 3 Goddesses and what they represent in the cycles of change and challenge metaphorically and then take the class through a brief meditation where you have an opportunity to start thinking about your word for 2017

Saving Up Summer For Winter * * *

Oh, Summer, I wish you could last forever.  Just kidding, I don't really.  I love summer but I like change too. I would go crazy without the change of seasons.  These are some of my favorite scenes of what turned out to be a blissfully long Summer.  I will be coming back to these pics 6 months from now, when we are buried underneath layers of ice and snow to dream of succulents, warm summer sun, patio time with friends and about what the future holds.

YOGA is Not For Yogis, YOGA is For HUMANS < < <

I can't tell you how often I'm thankful that I found yoga years ago. Its not just about exercise - its about moving your body in healthy ways, while you contemplate the way you move through your life, while having time to think about the philosophy and laws of nature which help us to understand where we are in this experience of being human. THAT is yoga. And THAT is why I studied, and continue to study with Laurel Van Matre at#YOGAGardenMPLS:
This is my personal "Yoga Has Helped Me With..." List:
- Managing stress in college at the University of North Texas
- Managing spring #allergies symptoms for several years
- Transition to living in New York, New York
- Managing #anxiety when my income tanked along with the crash of 2008
- Bad bout of #depression in 2010
- Managing #stress as a new teacher / head of department in Idaho
- Sorting out what I want to do next with my life / career#NoForRealWhatAmIDoingHere
- Moving INTO the home I grew up in as a #GrownAssWoman
- Learning how the hell to #ACT for #VoiceOver after a dozen years as a vocalist, and keep my character by keeping me IN my #BREATH...
The last item was just this week. We all have our own list. And these#hashtags exist because in our modern world, we all deal with this stuff. Yoga is not for yogis, yoga is for humans.
I never ever ever intended on teaching yoga. I always loved that a yoga mat was a place for just ME - nothing to do with money, work, relationships, jobs.... it was a place to pause, so I could be better at those other things.
This stuff is about your own human #experience.

BEAUTY is MAGIC * * *

A lucky lady am I to have such artistic friends.  They say you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.  I feel blessed to be around people who have designed their lives around how they see beauty in the world and how much they appreciate the magic in that.

I've centered my teaching and practice around the breath the past few years (you regulars are like "yes, we know").  I always (ok, almost constantly) remind my students to remember to pause long enough throughout their poses and shapes to feel their breath make it's way through them.  It keeps us grounded in our muscles and bones and gives us our individual experience while we work together as a group.  Feeling our breath move us in our practice gives us a memory of what it feels like to be grounded and empowers us to map our way back there off our mats, when we need it most.

These pics were taken almost exactly a year ago in Joshua Tree National Park over Labor Day weekend.  It's absolutely one of the most magical places I have ever been.  It started to rain just as we were driving into the park so we had to pull over and wait.  It was incredible to see so much rain fall so quickly and recede just as fast.  But it was perfect timing, rain drops hung on to all the Joshua Trees and plants in the park and reflected the sunlight.  All that water made the colors richer and you could smell the earth in that way you only get after a good rain but like times 10.  I think of it often, it's beauty is just unbelievable.  And when I get lost or sad or lose my way I can map my way back to it's colors, the smell of the air, the heat of the desert and it brings me right back to my breath and my muscles and bones and makes me see the magic in getting to experience all that.

"The Yoga Garden Teacher Training has profoundly impacted my study of yoga and teaching. Laurel is beyond knowledgeable and her methodical teaching style has given me the tools to continue to expand and grow as a yoga practitioner and teacher. Thanks to the YGTT, I now have a much more solid understanding of yoga postures and their alignment and can confidently teach an intelligent and well thought yoga sequence. I could not have asked for a better and more amazing experience."

My design will attract your eyes,

but my details will capture your heart.

I am a sucker for design.  I got these flowers from my friends Linda Wu and Laura McCabe on my birthday in 2014.  We met at a Balinese restaurant in SF and Linda handed them to me right there in the lobby.  I loved them so much and paraded them around all night until I was able to put them in a coffee cup in the room I was staying in.  The YOGA Garden logo was designed by my friend Ave in 2011.  She has been a dear friend for years, and I've been lucky lady-bird to trade yoga for her amazing graphic design skillz as my business grew.

Beauty inspires us.  It makes us appreciate what we have and who we are and who we want to be.  Watching someone move into and through a beautiful pose, with grace and ease no less, makes us want to move the same way.  I found this quote by a Swedish designer last week and I can't stop thinking about it. We need that inspiration but our understanding of the importance of the way we put it together is what makes it beautiful, and ours.

A well executed design shines when it comes from the heart. Whether it be a bouquet of flowers or a yoga pose,  the beauty shines when we care about the details. When we take the time to step into the process and make it a collaboration between what we understand now and making something new.  We truly shine on our mats in these poses when we understand the actions, the details that go into the making the shape.  When we have the heart to work with what we can do now and keep moving that forward from there vs trying to make a shape we don't yet understand because we skipped over the actions that take us there.  We have to slow down, and pay attention to the details to move from the heart and make it our own.

* * * * GROWTH and DESTRUCTION

For a seed to achieve its greatest expression,

I'm finishing up my very first 200 hour yoga teacher training with 6 lovely yogis and it has been both hard work and so much fun.  Starting something new is always fun.  That space between what is possible and taking the first steps toward making it real is an awesome space of infinite possibilities.  We love that space where we get to talk about it with our friends, and roll it over and over in our heads how great it's going to be.  We figure it all out in the shower or talking to ourselves in the car.  It's going to be perfect.

But it's the part about where we have to begin is when it gets tricky.  You all know what I mean, the part where you have to do the actual work.  Where you have to start a new process that is unfamiliar and full of new tools that you don't know how to use.  Where we get challenged to try something new and we start to question why we started the process to begin with.  It would be so much more comfortable to stick with what we know and learning in front of other people makes us feel stupid anyway.  Where we return to the physical.  The physical is where the magic happens.  Where our ideas take shape and evolve into collaboration.  Where we have to crack open our familiarity and comfort to reach beyond ourselves to learn and grow.

Since I opened YOGA Garden 4+ years ago I kept getting asked when I was going to do a 200 hour training and I really never thought I would.  One thing the world does not need is another 200 hour training.  But I decided I would give it a shot for a few students who had been asking and anyone new who was interested and see how it went.  And like always, the process of growth was frustrating and wonderful and ultimately so rewarding. I can't wait to do it again.

* * * * * Unassailable SERENITY . . . . . . .

I believe I know the only cure,

which is to make one’s center of life inside of one’s self,

not selfishly or exceedingly,

but with a kind of unassailable serenity

— to decorate one’s inner house so richly that one is content there,

glad to welcome anyone who wants to come and stay,

but happy all the same when one is inevitably alone.

I've been loving meditation more and more these days after years of fighting with it. It used to really seem like a chore, another thing on my list of things to do for the day I didn't want to and could easily knock off and not feel bad about it.  It used to seem kind of selfish and indulgent.  But I look forward to now as much as my asana practice.  I find boundaries in my breath that decorate the walls of my inner life like nothing on the outside can and now I can't get there fast enough.

A NEW Story for a NEW Year \ \ \ \ \

/// START A NEW STORY

As we live through each season we move forward through cycles, change and choice. Within us and all around us.  On the solstice we move from the time of Ether to Earth.  Each of the seasons is symbolized by one of the 5 elements: Winter = Earth, Spring = Water, Summer = Fire and Fall = Air.  The element of Ether is symbolized by the time between Halloween and the Solstice.  The element of ether is symbolic of our intuition, our ability to close our eyes and sit still.  It is a place of creativity before boundaries, judgment, insecurity and this freedom is what ignites the creative spark at our core. It's where the story begins. It gives us a light in the dark, our word for the year, an idea about how we would like to tell our story for a new year.

But in order for our word, dream, desire to manifest it has to become physical, like a seed.  It has to take shape, to have a place to root into and grow.  The element of earth is symbolic of the body.  As we move from ether to earth we start to manifest our idea physically.  We begin to make choices about the way we breathe, move and rest to build a body that reflects where we are now and what direction we want to go.  Our bodies literally take the shape of our hearts and minds, each pose a reflection of our awareness as we weave and unwind our narrative of experience.

Next week we move from Ether to Earth.  We will move from one season to the next and into a new year.  We will step into a new cycle of change and choice and create the story of a new season in our lives with us as we go.

Yoga Garden
Realize Your Body's Deep Potential to Wholeness

Yoga Garden is a space—physical and spiritual—very dear to my heart, where I have realized the deep potential of my body’s relationship to grace, empowerment, community, and wholeness, and my capacity to continually evolve in my practice, through the brilliant guidance of Laurel Van Matre. In more ways than one, Laurel has facilitated healing in my life, and has instilled in me a deep understanding of yoga’s expansive potential to create openings, in the body and in the world, for healing. I was especially impacted by Laurel’s gift after experiencing a fully ruptured disc in my cervical spine, which doctors insisted required nothing less than surgery and spinal fusion. Laurel’s research into this condition, and her personal attention both in class and private sessions, supported my eventual full recovery with literally no medical intervention. In addition to fostering all levels of asana practice, Laurel also cultivates arts and culture events among her students and in the community—I, along with many other artists, have been warmly hosted in performance and sharing, and her classes always incorporate metaphoric resonance and myriad portals for not just somatic, but imaginative and intellectual comprehension as well. She is a goddess! And Yoga Garden Minneapolis is truly a special, welcoming, peace-affirming refuge.

I am a competitive person I will admit.  I LOVE to compete and I hate to lose.  But I am most competitive with myself.  And for the sake of growth and to learn not just because I hate losing.  The part about losing isn't the loss in not winning the game it's the loss in not moving ahead.  It's about feeling like I didn't grow.  So competition to me equals growth.  And in order to grow we need each other.

I will never be more competitive with you than I am with myself because you're a star.  I want to compete with you because I think we're all amazing and we all have our own weird way of seeing and experiencing the world that needs to be shared.

Level playing field were we all get to compete and work together is so much better than dividing us up into winners and losers.  The competition is the game.

You're a star -- and so am I. I'm a genius -- and so are you. Your success encourages my brilliance, and my charisma enhances your power. Your victory doesn't require my defeat, and vice versa.

Those are the rules in the New World -- quite unlike the rules in the Old World, where zero-sum games are the norm, and only one of us can win each time we play.

In the New World, you don't have to play down or apologize for your prowess, because you love it when other people shine. You exult in your own excellence without regarding it as a sign of inherent superiority. As you ripen more and more of your latent aptitude, you inspire the rest of us to claim our own idiosyncratic magnificence . . . .
