> > > > > > > Time For a Change /// Winter Solstice Class

 + Start a New Story +

Everyone has a story.  Everyone wants to tell their story.  And Everyone's story is worth being told.

As we live through each season we move forward through cycles, change and choice. Within us and all around us.  On the solstice we move from the time of Ether to Earth.  Each of the seasons is symbolized by one of the 5 elements: Winter = Earth, Spring = Water, Summer = Fire and Fall = Air.  The element of Ether is symbolized by the time between Halloween and the Solstice.  The element of ether is symbolic of our intuition, our ability to close our eyes and sit still.  It is a place of creativity before boundaries, judgment, insecurity and this freedom is what ignites the creative spark at our core. It's where the story begins. It gives us a light in the dark, our word for the year, an idea on how we would like to tell our story for a new year.

But in order for our word, dream, desire to manifest it has to become physical, like a seed.  It has to take shape, to have a place to root into and grow.  The element of earth is symbolic of the body.  As we move from ether to earth we start to manifest our idea physically.  We begin to make choices about the way we breathe, move and rest to build a body that reflects where we are now and what direction we want to go.  Our bodies literally take the shape of our hearts and minds, each pose a reflection of our awareness as we weave and unwind our narrative of experience.

This Thursday night we will move from Ether to Earth.  We will move from one season to the next and into a new year.  We will step into a new cycle of change and choice   and create the story of a new season in our lives with us as we go.

"At the end of the day, your life is not the sum total of the       things that happened to you, but how you told the story."
- Douglas Brooks

I gotta say, as we get closer to winter I appreciate YOGA Gardens gardens more and more.  And with the new heater and all the studio is feeling down right tropical.  Makes a Minnesota winter worth-while, I'm even kind of looking forward to it.

= PLAYFULNESS & PRODUCTIVITY +

Us creative types and the importance of our non-linear ways.  We will not be productive if we don't get to play.  We need room to move.  We need a place to work where we can push back boundaries and remember there is always more.  Moving from A > B is not how we're going to get things done.

I just read a great article about that very subject.  The author Matthew Schuler talks about the importance of being fluid between what seem like opposing ideas.

Sound familiar?

It fits in perfectly with what we've been talking about in class: Karma & Lila, Work and Play and the need to remember to include both in our practice.  Link to the article below:

We'll talk more about it tonight at 630 //// All Levels Vinyasa > Vinyasa means flow or to be Fluid incase you didn't know that already.

YOUR YEAR IN A WORD /// My Word for 2013: VOICE

Into the dark we go…

This Thursday, on Halloween, we move into the darker half of the year.  So, we need to have a plan…what are you going to do with all that time in the dark?

A couple years ago I started a project for myself.  Around this time of year I would pick a word that would be my 'guide' for the upcoming year.  I would start thinking about it this time of year as my season as a garden designer ended and I had more time to focus on my yoga practice and art projects.

I realized in retrospect I was picking words that represented where I needed to do my work, dharma for the yoga geeks.  The words were usually something I was lacking and definitely afraid of in some way.  They just started out in the dark from an etheric place of listening and looking and watching what my habits were and what I wanted to change.  The same place of listening we go into when meditating or find flow in our practice.

Over the course of the year the words evolved from the curiosity of what they meant in general to what they meant to me.  They began to create narratives and tell a story.  They moved dynamically, grew and changed from word to phrase to sentence to paragraph to a story.

My word for 2013 was VOICE.  This time last year I knew I needed to learn to articulate better with words.  I knew I could say what I needed to say artistically and design wise - no problem.  Make words and letters look pretty, no problem.  But, I was lacking in my VOICE by articulation.  So, as part of my YOUR YEAR IN A WORD for 2013 I committed to blogging everyday.  It was really kind of terrifying at first.  And my goal was to have 365 blog entries by the end of 2013.  I started my project blogging on the 10th of Feb and posted everyday through April.  And what I learned from my word was to just show up > Show Up Everyday (There is, of course, a blog entry about it) and something would unfold.  And in that I started to overcome my fear of my own VOICE and I wrote some pretty good entries.  I actually started to have fun with it, looked forward to it and began keeping a log of ideas I had that I wanted to write about.  I stopped writing daily when I realized I was just posting to post.  Once I had more of an idea about what I wanted to say I reserved writing for the clarity of my voice.  The story of my word began to unfold and as it got bigger I gained more confidence.

Now, punctuation and sentence structure still remain a complete mystery to me,  and I'm not declaring myself Shakespeare in any way.  But I did find my VOICE.  I'm not as afraid of it as I was a year ago.  I have a direct relationship with that word and what it means now in a way that adds strength to my foundation.

So, this Halloween, Thursday night @ 630 we will sit still, go into the dark and start thinking about the story we want from a word for a new year…

If you imagine less, less will be what you undoubtedly deserve.

Do what you love, and don’t stop until you get what you love.

Winter is upon us.  Not just here, that sounds boring and heavy, but upon us.  It's a little more poetic and gives us some time to plan.

As we move toward longer nights and shorter days we think about what it is we want to work on this winter as we move inside.  We remember the back body, the past, the people and experiences that have supported and nurtured us along the way.  We step onto our mats and move toward what is unfamiliar, to build a new experience.  We will surprise ourselves with what we've grown come spring.

Here's to the dark, where all of us get a chance to begin again!

(We will talk more about this for the annual Your Year In A Word class on Thursday, which is actually on Halloween this year...Start thinking about your words lovely people of the future!)

Recently discovered and have fallen in playlist love w Washed Out.   I had a similar response to Metric when I saw them play at Rock The Garden this Summer, and have had a girl crush on the lead singer ever since.  Which with the cooler temps, low light and switch from iced chai to steamed seems already so far away.  So, it's time for a new list as we move into a new season with a little hit of Summer....We'll give it a listen for our Advanced Practice tonight @ 630.

+ An Even GIVE & TAKE +

Creative people need focus

and the first way to focus is by being supported

by at least one or two people who love and nurture you.

It's very difficult to be creative on one's own.

Everyone needs at least one or two people who believe in them.

There are so many parallels between being an art student and a student of yoga.

My good friend and studio mate from college, Kim (aka Young Guns), recently gave me the sketch in this pic as a gift for Yoga Garden.  The sketch is by our painting and drawing instructor, Mr. Boppel.  He was a teacher and mentor to us both.  We loved Mr. Boppel.  By the way he dressed one would assume he rode up to the Art Building on a Harley which was endearingly offset by the cup of tea he always carried around with him, complete with saucer.  He used to check up on us periodically through our 3 hour painting class to make sure we were doing our work.  Which we always were, we loved being in the studio.  He'd say something inspiring, complementary or give us a suggestion on how we could improve and then move on.  No big deal.  All part of the process.  And with each sweep we drew our focus in a bit more.  Got a little clearer on what the image was we were trying to make.  An even give and take, he appreciated us too.

The idea behind Yoga Garden is the same. It is a place where we are artists/yogis individually but support each other collectively through having a studio space to practice the give and take.  As artists we try to find a way to express ourselves openly and fully to tell our stories a little bit at a time.  We look for ways to express our appreciation for what we see in the world around us in a way that is beyond words or conversation.  As yoga students we do the same.  We move through forms, make shapes, refine with action to see what images we can create.  Bring into focus what we are capable of with the help of an entire studio.

There is so much momentum behind the studio now as Yoga Garden comes up on finishing it's second cycle around the Sun.  It's exciting to see and feel and I feel lucky to be a part of it. We've got a great group of teachers who are all very adept with great training and always working on refining the focus in their teaching.  A great group of students who are entrepreneurial, artistic, curious and ever appreciative of the studio environment that continues to grow.  Again, I feel lucky.

An even give and take.
A room full of teachers and students just happy to be in the studio.
Everything is possible.

I've been spending all my free time this summer here on my back porch.   Nestled in the corner in my redwood chair behind my screen of Virginia Creeper.  Underneath the lilac tree and the hot summer sky.  It's my little chariot that bookends my summer days, starting w coffee and ending with a look at whatever phase of the moon we are in.  I get to sit here beneath the layers of the trees as they bloom and then leaf out, the sun as it changes throughout the summer and adds layers to the light and shadow of the surrounding landscape.  A stillness that is not still at all that I am happy to be reminded to be a part of beneath the layers of my day.

It's become the puja or the ritual focus of my home this summer and I am it's happy devotee.

Come next winter this little lady will be my Hot Summer Sun.

You know in January when we've got feet of snow on the ground blanketing inches thick ice underneath and a summery, hot, July day seems impossible.  I put her on my windowsill so her pretty yellow face is the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning and look outside.

YOGA as EXPLORATION * * * *

What a great weekend it was.

We had a great turnout and got a lot done.  We weaved in and out of our poses during a crazy storm on Friday night that pushed rain water through the ceiling and left many of us w/o power for days.  The weekend had originally been scheduled for 3 weeks earlier and had to be moved unexpectedly due to a hip injury Christina was dealing with.  So, there was a little bit of chaos from beginning to end which just makes me feel lucky.  I love it when things get a little chaotic.  We have to get creative.  It opens things up a bit and creates a space charged with the unexpected and leaves me feeling lucky with whatever it is I come up with as a result.  And it's always more fun to do that in a group.

The chaos leading up to the weekend dovetailed nicely with a great conversation we had going about yoga as exploration vs. following a particular order of any one system.  Christina has studied many different schools of yoga extensively and has always had a great point of view on what makes each one of them valuable.  She is masterful at teaching from her own experience with each.  I think it's really important to find a good teacher as well as a group to practice with, we can only get so far on our own. We need each others point of view to create useful boundaries to push off and into to grow as well as time on our own.  It can feel a little chaotic at times choosing between the two but we need them both to grow.

So a little chaos is good.  It creates space for exploration.  The floor is dry, the power is back on, we all got to be a part of a great weekend with a wonderful teacher.  We all have new nuggets of info to practice on our own and share with each other.

Christina has a great blog, you can read her entry about her time at Yoga Garden here.

Thanks again to all for a great weekend, L

The Wild Iris

At the end of my suffering
there was a door.

Hear me out: that which you call death
I remember.

Overhead, noises, branches of the pine shifting.
Then nothing. The weak sun
flickered over the dry surface.

It is terrible to survive
as consciousness
buried in the dark earth.

Then it was over: that which you fear, being
a soul and unable
to speak, ending abruptly, the stiff earth
bending a little. And what I took to be
birds darting in low shrubs.

You who do not remember
passage from the other world
I tell you I could speak again: whatever
returns from oblivion returns
to find a voice:

from the center of my life came
a great fountain, deep blue
shadows on azure seawater.

^ Laying Bricks to Back Bend ^

I felt that everything is beautiful,

but that which man tries intentionally to make beautiful;

that the work of an ordinary bricklayer is more valid than the artwork of all but a very few artists.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Back bends can be hard...I used to really avoid them.  I couldn't understand how people could love them and do them with out having insane lower back pain afterward.  Now I love them.  Because I do them from the legs, from the bottom up.  One brick at a time, build the pose from the bottom up and you will make something  > > >

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write,

We have an idea of what we know.  And we can choose to repeat what we know and stay comfortable or we can take it apart and put it back together again in as many ways we can think of.  A perfect quote for working on triangle pose this week.  It's such a simple shape.  Let's see how many ways we can make that shape and what we've learned by the end of the week.

That challenge is more interesting than comfort, don't you agree?

Sunday, June 2, 2013

^ INTERESTING and PRETTY ^

I love it when my students pic the pose.  This week it's triangle which just so happens to be in my personal top 3, I spend a lot of time here when I practice.  But it's a tricky one too.  I'm seeing a lot of irritated hamstring attachments from what I think is over stretching with out engaging muscle in this pose.  So we will be working on this one all week.  I love the drawing, it reflects our need to know the
'facts' what is the'right' and 'wrong' thing to do in a pose but also our own interpretation of how we make it our own.  Never get tired of that play...that's what keeps it interesting and pretty.

People always comment on the gorgeous natural light we get in Yoga Garden, which we do and I love.  In the evenings during summer we get a really beautiful warm reflection off the pretty brick building in back.  And it's surrounded by trees.  I love this pic, you can feel the little sanctuary we have once we get to the studio and settled in.  And sometimes the moon watches over us.

A D V E N T U R E < < < < < < < <

You can't make either life or art,

you have to work in the hole in between,

which is undefined.

That's what makes the adventure of painting.

- Robert Raushenberg

Create the space and then move forward into that.  It's so much nicer than trying to force your way forward.  We pick a pose and do the work.  And the work usually isn't where you think it's going to be.  Which is another way of saying the effort will come and find us and it may not be where we'd like it to be.  The adventure is in finding and then holding the space and filling it with something beautiful.

* THINKING Made VISUAL *

I LOVE any conversation that inspires a discussion on how the world takes shape around us based on what we think.   The way we choose to lay lines down on a page in a drawing, color for a design, make or create anything is another form of thinking.  Usually inspired by what we feel first.  Our inner worlds mirrored in a way that is beyond what can be explained entirely.  Lucky for us.

Don't get me wrong, I love words too, but they don't tell the whole story.  We are as much what we do and create as much as what we speak and say.

Our yoga mats are mirrors, it's actually called Maya in Sanskrit.  We get a reflection of how we make choices, talk to ourselves, design our lives around what we think.

Thanks Saul...you were amazing.  Still are.

+ PICK It NOW +

Whatever you choose, pick it now,

start small,  and begin proving to yourself that you can become the type of person you want to become.

Tiny habits, when repeated consistently,

can be the difference between success or failure, confidence or doubt, and even happiness or depression.

I Originally posed this here but wanted to repost because this quote has kind of become an anthem for us in class these days.  It's loaded with good advice in a simple way that's easy to remember.
